I'm in the process of doing a spot of boat wiring and the other day I found that I was one switch short. Many of the switches are made by Carling a well respected and often used product on many boats. What I needed was a momentary switch, the type that is normally off and only makes contact as long as the bottom of the switch is depressed. No problem I thought, just pop down to my local West marine store and pick one up. Truth be told I do not often use West Marine but they are my nearest retailer and are a short 10 minute drive away. They did indeed have a switch but were asking almost $30 and that was not including the mounting plate which they did not have and which I also required. Needless to say I passed on the switch which was useless without the mount anyway and found something else to do.
Looking on the Internet I eventually ordered the switch through bestboatwire for $5 including the mounting plate. When you consider West Marine charge 500% more for the same product it makes me wonder why anybody uses their stores at all.
The switch is being installed into the main switch panel and is for controlling some new Imtra LED lights which I am fitting to the main salon. If you read my previous post on dimming LED lights you will know that the momentary switch is required to control the dimming unit. Anyhow now that I can complete the project I hopefully will have a completed installation by tomorrow by which time I can share some photos with you along with a wiring diagram and schematic.
