Many of the projects on and around the boat require the use of wood working tools. Like all tools they work best and give the best results when well maintained. Chisels and plane blades in particular although primarily wood working tools get used for all sorts of things, often in ways that they should not be used or were designed for. I must confess that I am not the only one who has opened a paint can with a wood chisel.
A sharp chisel will repay many times over in the quality of work and speed. One of the most used tools in my workshop is the Tormek grinding and sharpening system. I have had it for man years and in fact bought mine over from England when I moved to the USA so loathe was I to relinquish it. Tormek sharpeners have been around for many years and are available in from a variety of different suppliers for around $350 which is quite a lot of money but it is a well built tool that will go on producing razor sharp blades for years to come long after the cost is forgotten. I have to stress that I have no connection with Tormek in any way it's just that I used it earlier today to sharpen up a bunch of tools and I thought that On Board readers may be interested. The manual that comes comes with the machine is thick, well written and illustrated and although you may have to refer to it the first few times that you use the machine after while it all becomes second nature.
