I am currently in my hometown for the holidays, no prizes for guessing where. If you look carefully you can spot one of the old sailing barges going under tower bridge. Now mostly used for tourist trips the old barges used to operated by a man, boy and dog and transported good to coastal towns and areas further up the Thames inaccessible by large craft. What is also unusual about this picture is that the bridge is not often opened now; back in the day the bridge which used to be operated by steam engines, now electric would open often to allow ships under to unload at the wharves on the south bank. I well remember this scene as a boy but now the wharves and the big grey cranes have long gone to give way to condos and fancy offices.
